Keep Your Rugs Squeaky Clean: A Guide

How to make sure your rugs – significant financial investments – are kept clean and looking like new.  The daily maintenance Dos and Donts are made clear in the following 5 easy steps.

Shake it Off

If not a humongous rug – don’t hesitate to take your rugs outside each day and remove loose debris from it with good shake-up. The loose dust and small gravels that we bring in with our shoes are not embedded too deep in and can be set loose easily. Before moving onto the deep cleaning part – the first step acts as a major contributor to getting your rug clean like brand new.

Vacuum Daily

Break out the vacuum cleaner daily – without fail. Systematic vacuuming on a regular basis helps keep your rugs squeaky clean. Maintain the original sheen, shine, and lustre that you brought your rug home with. Remembering to vacuum your rug on an everyday basis literally adds years to the life of your rugs.

Get those Stains Out

That pesky stain if still persists on your delicate bedside rug – use a stain removal product that means serious business. The remover should be compatible with the fabric of your rug. Remember to blot the stain from the outside to inside and then proceed to rinse. Repeat these steps if be needed. Scrubbing too hard is not too wise as it can have an unintended ill-effect on the fibres -which if once they start to unravel can be terribly difficult to put back into place.

Clean it Dry

At least once a year, a deep cleaning is recommended for all your super organic area rugs. If your home is privy to a lot of house parties where everyone invariably ends up bringing in the grime and dust of the wild, wild outdoors right onto your precious rug – the deep cleaning needs might just be a little more for your rug. Use gentle cleaners for rugs made of natural fibres that turn up just new after a little warm water treatment. If you are machine washing your colorful abstract area rugs, manual instructions must be followed to the T.

Keep ‘em Dry

The deep cleaning should always be followed by a thorough drying of both the sides. Squeeze out all excess water, use the natural heat of the Sun and all available Sunshine or even an indoor fan to speed up the process. Make sure to do this step without any slack as this keeps the mildew and mould away.
